MORRISTOWN, NJ - At the 2016 Athletic Gallery of Honor Induction Ceremony, former Morristown Athletes were honored for their success both on and off the field during their time at Morristown High School.
Established in 2003 by the Morristown High School Athletic Gallery of Honor Association, various athletes over the years have earned a place in The Gallery of Honor located outside the high school auditorium. Supported by the Alumni Association and Board of Education, all athletes honored have been selected based on a strict set of guidelines.
This years honorees included Carter Mobley (Class of ‘65), Joseph Thorpe (Class of 82), Jamahl Cochran (Class of ‘00), Connor Lade (Class of ‘08 and Defender for the New York Red Bulls), Christina Epps (Class of ‘09 and olympic track and field athlete), Patricia Mattos (girls tennis coach), Ted Baldanzi (girls field hockey and lacrosse photographer), Charles and Sandy Gibson (swimming team supporters) and the 1947 Boy’s Tennis Team.
Morristown Athletic Director Smitty Horton thanked all the individuals who helped organize this ceremony including the Board of Education, the student presenters and many other coaches and members of the Athletic Gallery of Honor Selection Committee. He also thanked the principal of Morristown High School for keeping this tradition alive for more than a decade.
“Today is a very special day for all inductees and it is with great pleasure that we acknowledge them for all their accomplishments here at Morristown High School,” he said.
“It’s an honor to stand here today as your athletic director especially because I know so many of the people up here who are being honored today,” he also said.
All athletes are nominated by members of the community including coaches, teachers and peers. They are then reviewed by the Athletic Gallery of Honor Selection Committee and the Alumni Association who review their athletic history and score them according to a points system.
